Electric bicycle or e-bike is one of the greenest forms of transportation we have in this day and age. Actually an e-bike is simply a bicycle with an attached motor on it which assists the rider. It is a simple mode of transportation that was initially developed a century ago.
Actually, it took a full century before the electric powered bicycle we have come to know was first mass produced and became commercially available. Believe it or not, the electric bicycle is the beginning of the electric revolution in Asia, particularly in China.
In China, e-bikes are the most widely used means of transport by the Chinese people. As a matter of fact, it even outnumbered other transport modality in the Chinese mainland. Today, China is the world's leading producer of electric bicycles.
In the first year of the 21st century, e-bikes are already considered as an environmentally friendly mode of transport due to its efficient use of electric power in a transportation mode. In 2002, electric bikes are already doing well in Japan. During this time, Asia and Europe lead the electric bike market.
In 2007, everyone looks at the "e" bike as a replacement for a motorbike. In 2008, Toys "R" Us plans to expand its distribution of the e-bikes tenfold, to 550 stores. It has been the most rapid growth year in the company's 10-year history.
In 2009, e-bikes are already becoming more and more popular with the mass market. Since then, electric bicycles have seen a constant increase in popularity and use; some manufacturers have even utilized the technology in velomobiles and recumbent bicycles.
At the end of the day, the future generations are the only one who can really determine if what's in store for the people’s mode of transport. Perhaps e-bikes or the electric bicycles will be one of those upcoming trends of human-powered vehicle.
